About Osteopathy

Osteopathy is an effective form of complementary medicine that aims to restore the body’s musculoskeletal system to a state of balance.  As Osteopaths we focus on how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue function as a holistic unit.  We aim to relieve your pain, dysfunction and immobility via a “hands-on” approach.

Osteopaths pride themselves on their expertise in using “hands-on” techniques. Our treatment methods, addressing a wide range of musculoskeletal complaints, are considered some of the safest and most gentle forms of complementary therapies available.

Common complaints include: Neck & head pain, lower back pain, sciatica, headaches, jaw pain, sciatica, repetitive strain injuries, sports injuries, arthritic pain & stiffness as well as pre and post-natal care.

We use a wide range of treatment techniques including: Soft tissue massage and stretching techniques, Articulation/Mobilisation, Muscle Energy Techniques, Counter-strain and Functional Techniques, Cranial and Biodynamic Approach and Joint Manipulation (High Velocity Low Amplitude techniques) if appropriate.

Osteopathy is suitable for treating people of all age groups. This includes newborn babies, children, teenagers, pregnant women, adults, the elderly, athletes, tradesmen and more.

Our Osteopaths are university qualified, registered with the APHRA, Osteopaths Registration Board of Queensland and are accredited members of the Australian Osteopathic Association (AOA).  Our skills are kept up to date with regular continuing professional development courses to stay abreast of the latest research.

A typical consultation lasts up to 40 minutes and includes the taking of a comprehensive case history, a thorough examination, followed by hands-on treatment. All techniques aim to restore movement to areas of the body identified as being tight or restricted in movement. This enables the body to function at its optimal level which in turn allows healing to occur quickly.

Consistent with our whole person philosophy, advice for further management of your condition, including stretches, ergonomics, posture, rehabilitative exercises and nutrition may also be incorporated into a consultation to ensure that your condition is addressed thoroughly.

This will depend on what you present with. Most people find relief from pain after the first session and significant improvement after 3-5 treatments.

Longer term health goals involve education and awareness of the underlying causes of your complaint, offering you tools to empower yourself to better health, and providing you with strategies to prevent recurrences.

No referral is required from your GP to see an Osteopath.

No. However any additional information (x-ray/scans etc) that contributes to an accurate diagnosis is useful. If you already have recent x-rays or scans, bring them with you to your first consultation.
This depends on the seriousness of your problem. Most patients feel improvement after their initial visit. It is also not uncommon to be sore for up to 48 hours after treatment as we are changing tissue physiology to restore balance to your body.
